Last week, Bordeaux reported a sharp increase in overseas sales, with China and Hong Kong confirming the absolute control of the export market in the region. China has overtaken Germany becoming the largest importer of Bordeaux wine, with imports increasing more than 85%.
China is in third place with € 231 million, behind the United Kingdom with € 274 million and € 326 million for Hong Kong. These numbers put China and Hong Kong together representing about 60 % in value compared to the rest of the top 10 export markets combined. Overall, during the period June 2010/June 2011, Bordeaux exports were 23% higher in volume and 34% higher in value, although overall sales in France fell by 2%.
