Unique product from South Africa, Amarula...

Have you ever heard about “Amarula”, or “Amarula Liquor”? This unique liquor was originated in South Africa, place where Marula tree grows and with its fruits it is possible to elaborate this beverage.
Marula tree grows naturally in the African savannas and curiously it can not be grown in other part out of this place. Its fruit, a yellowish berry when it is rape, contains in it a big and hard pit with a white pulp.
In South Africa it is know by the “Marriage Tree” due to its well known aphrodisiac properties. Also it is known by the “Elephants Tree” because during the season when the fruit is rape, the elephants use to shake the tree, making the fruit fall down so it is possible to eat them. Elephants enjoy eating the fruit of the marula tree. A common tale is that the elephants enjoy eating the fermented fruits and become "drunk" from them. Because of the marula trees association with elephants, the distiller has made them its symbol and supports elephant conservation efforts
This unique beverage is obtained by collecting the fruits from different regions of this country as the trees can not be cultivated in a specific place. The fruits are bought to the people that naturally collect the fruits.
As a first step, the pulp is separated from its shell and pit and it is put in fermenting tanks at a constant temperature.
Once the fermentation is over, the wine is double-distillated in columns and still. The product obtained after this process is aged during two year in oak barrels.
After this time the product is mixed with fresh cream until it reaches a soft beverage, getting a 17° alcohol content.
Amarula was first commercialized as a liquor beverage by the end of September 1989.
It will be very interesting to have this unique South African product listed in our Portfolio. All producers are welcome to become part of our team. Contact us at info@globaliquors.com
